Upton Sinclair, an American writer and political activist, was best known for these poignant words. A journalist and politician, Sinclair was committed to exposing wrongdoing, despite pushback for his progressive ideas. But at what point do journalism and politics interest and at what point should they? To better understand this intersection, specifically the intersection for Sinclair, the differences between yellow journalism and muckraking must be understood.

Often times, a historical figure is disregarded during their life, but appreciated after death. Wether this be due to controversial actions, investigative pieces that did not end well, or being a pioneer in a subject meant to be left alone, decades and sometimes centuries later, people realize the impact of many. Ida, M. Tarbell, born November 5, 1857, is an exception to this rule. While Tarbell worked diligently to expose wrongdoings and fight for the voiceless, the press appreciated her and the people needed her.
